U.S. seeks bids to refurbish turbine-generators at 135-MW Center Hill Dam

Center Hill Dam

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers seeks bids to refurbish turbine-generators at 135-MW Center Hill Dam in Tennessee. Bids are due Nov. 18.

The Corps' Nashville District awarded contracts in 2013 to Terracon Consultants Inc. for geotechnical engineering services and in 2011 to Bauer Foundation Corp. to build a concrete seepage barrier in the main embankment at Center Hill on the Caney Fork River. It also sought information last year on firms capable of constructing a roller-compacted-concrete berm to reinforce an earthen saddle dam at Center Hill.

The Nashville District now seeks bids to rehabilitate turbine-generator Units 1, 2, and 3 in the Center Hill powerhouse, which began operation in 1950 and 1951. The Corps said the Center Hill units are at the top of the district's rehabilitation list.

Work is to include replacement of runners, wicket gates, and generator stator windings; refurbishment of servomotors and the unit braking system; restacking existing generator iron; and installing vibration monitoring and high-pressure thrust bearing oil lift systems. The refurbished turbines will be required to have aeration capability.
