ICOLD Annual Meeting under way in Seattle

ICOLD Seattle

The International Commission on Large Dams is holding its 81st Annual Meeting in Seattle this week, marking the event's first return to the United States since 1988.

ICOLD's five-day conference and exhibition includes a number of workshops, technical tours and workshops designed to give the international field of attendees a forum to share and learn about dam safety, design, maintenance and operation.

The event's local host is Seattle City Light, whose Officer of Power Supply and Environmental Activities, James Baggs, provided welcome remarks earlier this week.

Large dams and hydropower projects are essential in the Pacific Northwest, Baggs said, where mountain snowfall and rain provide an abundance of renewable hydroelectric power.

Seattle City Light's portfolio includes the 177-MW Gorge, 168-MW Diablo, and 450-MW Ross projects along the Skagit River, in addition to its largest plant, 1,003-MW Boundary.

The utility is also a partner of the Bonneville Power Administration, which markets the output of 31 federal hydropower projects -- including the 6,809-MW Grand Coulee -- located in the Columbia Basin.

ICOLD's Annual Meeting continues through the end of this week. For more information about the event, visit ICOLD's website here.
