Nile agency seeks water resources monitoring for Nile River Basin

Nile River Basin

The multi-nation Nile Basin Initiative (NBI) of eastern Africa invites expressions of interest for hydro-meteorological monitoring of water resources of the Nile River Basin. Responses are due August 15.

NBI promotes cooperation among Nile Basin states in use of water resources for hydropower, water supply and sanitation, irrigation, flood control, drought management, navigation, fisheries, and watershed management.

NBI's Nile Equatorial Lakes Subsidiary Action Program (NELSAP) recruited consultants in June for a feasibility study and social and environmental assessment of irrigation development and water resources management, including hydropower, in Rwanda's Muvumba River Valley. Other recent initiatives include a hydroelectric power development plan for South Sudan, development of the 90-MW Rusumo Falls hydroelectric project in Rwanda, and a multipurpose water resources development project, including hydropower, in the Aswa River Basin of Uganda and South Sudan.

In the current solicitation, NBI seeks consulting services for a needs assessment, design specifications, and tender documents for a strategic hydro-meteorological monitoring system for the Nile Basin. Over six months consultants are to develop detailed design specifications for strategic monitoring networks and to review the status of existing river basin monitoring networks in selected NBI countries.

Expressions of interest, by e-mail, mail, or delivery, are due to the address below by 10 a.m. August 15, labeled "Expression of Interest for Nile Cooperation for Results (NCORE) Project."
