Hydro construction firms sought for Uganda's 16-MW Kikagati, 39-MW Nsongezi

TronderEnergi AS, on behalf of Kikagati Power Co. Ltd., invites expressions of interest from hydro construction firms to develop the 16-MW Kikagati hydroelectric project and possibly the 39-MW Nsongezi hydro project in Uganda. Responses are due August 2.

Both run-of-river hydroelectric projects are proposed for the Kagera River in Uganda. Nile Equatorial Lakes states last year sought a project manager to develop the 90-MW Rusumo Falls hydroelectric project on the Kagera on the border of Rwanda and Tanzania.

In 2011, the Nile Basin Initiative (NBI) named Coyne et Bellier Ingenieurs Conseils/Tractebel Engineering SA to perform feasibility studies of multi-purpose reservoirs, including hydropower, in the Kagera Basin of Burundi, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda. NBI also recruited consultants for environmental and social impact assessments of four small multi-purpose dams in the Kagera Basin.

In the current solicitation, Norwegian power company TronderEnergi invites expressions of interest to develop Kikagati, a low-head project with an 11.5-meter-tall, 170-meter-long weir with gated spillway and flushing sluice; an intake with hydro-mechanical equipment and power canal; trashracks and gates at the turbine-generator intakes; a powerhouse with two 8-MW bulb turbine-generators; two main transformers; switchyard; and connection to two 33-kilovolt transmission lines.

Contractors also were invited to provide indicative prices for the Nsongezi project, which is in the final stages of a feasibility study 13 kilometers downstream from Kikagati. TronderEnergi said investors see the Nsongezi project as a natural continuation of the Kikigati project.

Expressions of interest are due by 4 p.m. Greenwich Mean Time plus 1 on August 2 by e-mail to the address below. For information, contact Inge Stolen, TronderEnergi AS, P.O.
