The Government of Angola has awarded a contract to environmental and engineering consultancy COBA to provide services and equipment for the 2,070-MW Lauca hydropower plant.

The Lauca project will be located on a section of the Kwanza River between the existing Cambambe and Capanda complexes, and is part of a continuing effort by the government to increase the country's hydroelectric capacity.

COBA said the project will include a roller-compacted concrete dam 132-meters-tall and a crest length of 1,075 meters. Power will be generated primarily by six generating units in the plant's main powerhouse, though a second powerhouse with a single 65.5 MW unit is also planned for construction at the toe of the dam.

The contract also includes consortium partner Lahmeyer, which will help COBA in the project's design, technical assistance to the owner in negotiations of contracts, approval of equipment design, inspections, shop assembly and final acceptance.

The consortium will also provide technical assistance in the general coordination of the project, supervision of civil construction works and erection of electromechanical equipment.

COBA said the contract has a duration of 66 months.
