U.S. seeks bids for dam safety seepage barrier at Ohio's Bolivar Dam


The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers seeks bids for construction of a dam safety seepage barrier at Bolivar Dam, a flood control structure in northeastern Ohio. A site visit is scheduled July 9 with bids due Aug. 5.

The Corps' Huntington, W.Va., District took information in November on firms capable of constructing the seepage barrier at Bolivar. It took information in June from firms capable of performing emergency rehabilitation project work at other dams and facilities in its Great Lakes and Ohio River Division.

Bolivar Dam is an 87-foot-tall, 6,300-foot-long embankment on Sandy Creek, a tributary of the Tuscarawas River. The Corps awarded a $4.7 million contract in 2012 to TAB Construction Co. Inc. to install six service gates and rehabilitate gate works at the dam.

The Corps now seeks bids for construction of a partial depth seepage barrier of 4,500 feet in length and 145 in depth through the upstream slope of the dam embankment terminating in the left abutment. Work also would include a grout curtain of 329 feet in length and 60 feet in depth in the left abutment from the end of the seepage barrier to near the emergency spillway. The work is expected to cost between $25 million and $100 million.

A solicitation notice may be obtained from the Federal Business Opportunities Internet site, www.fbo.gov, by entering Solicitation No. W9123713R0011 in the "Keyword/Solicitation #" box. A site visit is scheduled July 9.
