Toshiba Hydro Power Co., Ltd. (THPC), a subsidiary of global technology conglomerate Toshiba Corporation, has been awarded a contract to supply three 80 MW hydro turbines for the Nam Ou 5 hydroelectric plant in Laos.

The plant is being developed by China's Sinohydro Resources Ltd. on the Nam Ou River near Luang Prabang.

Per the contract, THPC will design and manufacture the turbines and generators for the Nam Ou 5 project, with the first unit to be delivered in January 2014. The first unit is expected to be in commercial operation by December 2015.

Toshiba (LSE: TOS) said the contract came in part thanks to its new Toshiba Asia Pacific (Thailand) Co., Ltd. (TATC), which was established in April to help promote and strengthen its interests in southeastern Asia.

HydroWorld.com reported earlier this week that Laotian officials are working on revisions to the country's 17-year old water use laws given the boom in hydropower development in recent years.
