Renewable energy developer Southwest Water and Electric Company (Suweco) will commission its 600-kW Cawayan micro hydro project later this week.

The US$1.96 million project, located in Barangay Guinlajon, is being developed in partnership with the Sorsogon II Electric Cooperative (Soreco).

Soreco, which acts as the province's distribution utility, and Suweco are still negotiating terms of Cawayan's power supply agreement.

HydroWorld.com last reported on the small hydroelectric project in April, when Suweco President Jose Silvestre M. Natividad said the plant fits into the company's philosophy of constructing small projects where larger ones would be unfeasible.

Sources said Suweco is currently pursuing the development of around 270 MW of new hydroelectric power capacity.
