3.9-MW Stanley Adamson small hydropower project back in operation after upgrades

Stanley Adamson Small Hydropower Project

The 3.9-MW Stanley Adamson small hydropower project is generating power once more after a series of upgrades were completed at the historic facility.

The plant, redeveloped by a partnership between Peterborough Utilities Inc. (PUI) and Trent University called Trent Energy Inc., was originally constructed in the late 1890s with a powerhouse built on the west bank of the Trent-Severn Waterway.

"We are pleased with and proud of this partnership, said John Wynsma, vice president of PUI Generation & Retail Services. "With the addition of this waterpower facility to our existing fleet, Peterborough becomes Ontario's leading community in the production of renewable energy."

The powerhouse's equipment was relocated into a new structure on the east bank in 1921 in a facility named after Stanley Adamson, who had served as first chairman of the Property Committee at Trent University and was instrumental in the institution's acquisition of much of its Nassau, Ontario, campus.

Trent Energy's recent US$22.8 million in upgrades were supported by an agreement with the Ontario Power Authority under the Hydroelectric Contract Initiative (HCI). Per an agreement made in November 2012, Trent University will receive its annual revenue for the first 20 years of the agreement, after which it will retain a 50% interest.

"This is a great example of the potential for the growth of waterpower in communities across the province," said Paul Norris, President of the Ontario Waterpower Association (OWA). "The Stanley Adamson project shows the unique business relationships and opportunities within waterpower that can provide Ontario communities with economic, environmental and energy benefits for present and future generations."
