The government of Nicaragua invites expressions of interest from consultants to help select 15 small hydro sites of 100 kW to 1 MW and develop pre-feasibility studies for the projects. Responses are due May 9.

Nicaragua has received funding from the Inter-American Development Bank and other international lenders for a national program for sustainable electrification and renewable energy, Programa Nacional de Electrificacion Sostenible y Energia Renovable (PNESER).

The Ministerio de Energia y Minas recruited consultants under the program in 2012 to perform an initial assessment of small hydro potential in two river basins. It also opened the 300-kW La Florida project in 2012 in Nicaragua's Atlantico Norte region.

The ministry seeks consultants to: establish methodology and criteria to select 15 waterpower sites and seek information of construction or plans to develop or expand hydroelectric projects; develop pre-feasibility studies of the 15 sites; and develop a sustainability strategy and funding proposal for implementing the projects. The work is expected to require six months with a budget of US$300,000.

Expressions of interest, and qualifications, in Spanish are due to the address below on paper or by e-mail by 4 p.m. May 9. For information, contact Lic. Eli Esau Roque Rocha, Unidad de Adquisiciones PNESER, Rotonda Roberto Teran (Centroamerica), 600 metros al Oeste, Edificio Vista Development, Segundo Piso, Managua, Nicaragua; E-mail:
