The government of Malawi invites expressions of interest from consultants to provide construction supervision to upgrade Kamuzu Barrage to increase Shire River Basin water security for critical uses including hydropower projects. Responses are due May 7.

Refurbishment of the half-century-old Kamuzu Barrage is part of the World Bank-financed Shire River Basin Management Program as well as the Integrated Water Resources Management Plan for Lake Malawi and the Shire River System. Malawi has issued a number of recent solicitations under the Shire Basin program, seeking consultants to perform environmental studies, engineers, construction supervision, and a series of river control and management tasks.

The Ministry of Water Development and Irrigation now invites expressions of interest from consultants for the Kamuzu upgrade, including review of engineering design and construction drawings, supervision of works and contract management, preparation of operation and maintenance documents, supervision of a weeds boom and weeds collector, and supervision of the installation of a hydrological measuring system.

Consultants are required to have experience in multi-disciplinary hydraulic infrastructure on major rivers, expertise in dam construction and installation of major steel structures such as gates, and experience working in Africa.

Information on the Shire River Basin Program may be obtained from the World Bank's Internet site.

Expressions of interest labeled, "Expression of Interest for Supervision of Construction Works of Kamuzu Barrage," are due by 2 p.m. May 7 to Ministry of Water Development and Irrigation, Attn: Chairman of the Internal Procurement Committee, Shire River Basin Management Program (Phase I) Project, ADL House - SRBMP Project Office, 2nd Floor, P.O. Box 30242, Capital City, Lilongwe, Malawi.
