Voith Hydro has been selected to equip Angola's new Cambambe 2 hydroelectric project, the company's office in Heidenheim, Germany, has announced.

The US$130 million order includes the supply and installation of four generators and turbines, as well as control and associated systems.

Once operational, the Voith-supplied turbines will add 700 MW of installed capacity to Angola's grid, doubling the African country's current hydroelectric capacity.

"With our supply, we are contributing sustainability to the economic development of Angola," Voith Hydro executive Dr. Roland Munch said. "Hydropower as a secure and cost-effective way of energy generation is offering a climate-friendly and resource-saving option -- particularly to emerging countries for the further extension and stabilization of power supply."

HydroWorld.com reported in June 2009 that Russia had pledged financial support for the Cambambe 2 project, which is located on the Kwanza River in Angola's Kwanza Norte province.

Angola has the potential for up to 18 GW of hydroelectric growth, Voith said, which accounts for just a fraction of Africa's estimated 400 GW-worth of untapped hydropower resources.

The company also recently completed work on the project's sister plant, Cambambe 1, which increased its output capacity by around 40%.
