Utility and hydropower project operator Seattle City Light has again earned "Climate Registered" status after measuring and verifying its carbon footprint, according to The Climate Registry.

The Climate Registry -- a non-profit organization that operates the only carbon footprint registry in North America -- is intended to help public and private entities measure, report and reduce their greenhouse gas emissions "with integrity".

"Climate Registered organizations understand that there are both environmental and economic benefits to understanding and managing your carbon footprint," Climate Registry executive director David Rosenheim said. "Seattle City Light has become part of a powerful community of Climate Registered organizations, with substantive data guiding and supporting its sustainable activities."

The registration not only shows consumers that the utility is committed to responsible environmental stewardship, Seattle City Light Superintendent Jorge Carrasco said, but also that it understands the cycles that make hydropower work in the Pacific Northwest.

"As a hydroelectric-based utility, we are well aware of the potential impacts of climate change, and the potential for reducing the snowpack we count on to supply water for our dams in the summer," Carrasco said. "That's why we are committed to doing what we can to limit our impact on the environment and help our customers do the same."

Seattle City Light became the first utility in the nation to achieve carbon-neutral status when, in 2005, the company announced it had offset all its carbon emissions. This year is the second consecutive year that the utility has earned Climate Registered status.
