Hydro-mechanical engineer sought to refurbish Afghanistan's 2.4-MW Gereshk hydro project

Project management firm Hill International seeks a hydro-mechanical engineer to refurbish and expand the 2.4-MW Gereshk hydroelectric project in Afghanistan's Helmand Province.

The New Jersey-based Hill, which has 100 offices worldwide, announced in April it won an US$8.8 million contract from Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (Afghanistan Electricity Authority) (DABS) to provide project implementation and supervision services for the Gereshk Electricity Services Improvement Project.

With a grant from the Asian Development Bank, DABS took bids in 2011 to rehabilitate Gereshk; expand it to 4.8 MW; and build, replace, and upgrade 30 kilometers of Gereshk transmission and distribution lines. The bank announced a strategic partnership with Afghanistan in 2009 that is to include investment in energy, transport, and irrigation sectors, including hydropower.

Hill International now seeks a hydro-mechanical engineer to be based in Afghanistan for the hydropower and transmission line project. The engineer would be responsible for reviewing existing design work on hydro-mechanical equipment; monitoring tests on completion, pre-commissioning, and commissioning, providing commissioning assistance; assisting in training DABS staff; and helping ensure hydro-mechanical works design, load control systems, and turbine performance and technology are appropriate for the project.

The hydro-mechanical engineer is to have a degree in mechanical engineering, at least seven years' experience as a hydro-mechanical engineer in site work for large projects including hydropower plants and transmission and distribution networks, and experience in design review and site supervision.

Applications for the position may be submitted via the Hill International Internet site under http://ch.tbe.taleo.net/CH02/ats/careers/requisition.jsp?org=KJM&cws=2&rid=2677&goback=%2Egde_975457_member_233114574.
