Nepal seeks rehab consultant for 1-MW Tinau, 640-kW Sundarijal

Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) invites expressions of interest from consultants for rehabilitation of the 1-MW Tinau and 640-kW Sundarijal hydroelectric projects in Nepal. Responses are due October 31.

With funding from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), NEA seeks the work under the Nepal Electricity Transmission Expansion and Supply Improvement Project. NEA pursued other hydropower rehab projects with ADB funding in 2009.

Tinau was commissioned in 1978 near Butwal, but was recommissioned in 1983 after repair of flood damage. The project features two 250-kW turbine-generators, a 500-kW unit, a 2.4-kilometer tunnel, underground desilting chamber, and powerhouse.

Sundarijal was commissioned in 1934 15 kilometers northeast of Kathmandu and has had minor electrical and mechanical upgrades over its life. It features two 320-kW Pelton turbines and synchronous generators supplied by a 1.7-kilometer steel penstock from the Kathmandu Valley water supply system.

NEA seeks consultants to help implement electro-mechanical rehabilitation of the two projects, including preparation of a needs assessment, technical specifications, and bid documents. It also seeks support in the bidding process and supervision of supply, installation, testing, and commissioning. With a budget of US$240,000, the work is expected to require 24 months.

A solicitation notice, including terms of reference, may be obtained from the ADB Internet site, www.adb.org, under the links "Businesses," "Consulting Opportunities," "Energy," "LOAN-2808."

Expressions of interest are to be submitted via the ADB website by October 31. For information, contact Project Officer Surendra Rajbhandari, Nepal Electricity Authority, E-mail: surendra_rajbhandari@yahoo.com.
