Alstom wins bid for work at 350-MW Baixo Iguacu

Brazilian utility Neoenergiahas has awarded a contract to Alstom for the supply of electromechanical and erection equipment for the 350-MW Baixo Iguacu hydropower plant.

The contract is valued at US$206 million, though Alstom says its share is around US$141 million.

As per the contract, Alsom will supply three Kaplan turbines, generators, and control, command and protection systems.

"Alstom holds around 40% of the Brazilian power market and has already delivered more than 100 turbines and generators over the past 10 years," says Marcos Costa, country president for Alstom in Brazil. "Baixo Iguacu is a new example of our commitment and efforts to continue delivering the best, clean and most efficient solutions to the national power market."

HydroWorld.com reported in August that Brazil's Ministry of Mines and Energy had granted concession contracts for Baixo Iguacu, which is expected to have its first turbine in operation by spring 2015.

The turbines will be produced at Alstom's Latin American Global Technology Centre, which opened in Taubate, Brazil, in March.
