The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has awarded a US$4.2 million contract to Ostrom Painting and Sandblasting Inc. for work at the 130-MW Barkley hydroelectric plant in Kentucky.

The Corps' Nashville district last solicited bids for the work in July, which calls for the surface preparation and coating of five of Barkley's tainter gates, and an option for the remaining seven.

Each tainter gate is 50 feet tall by 55 feet wide and mounted on concrete spillway piers.

The contract is Ostrom's second for work at the Barkley hydropower facility. In March, the company won an $829,000 contract to repair the gates' bent members, rusted web stiffeners and cracked weld connections.

Barkley Dam is located in western Kentucky on the Cumberland River. The plant is comprised of two embankment sections, a navigation lock, a powerhouse and a spillway section.
