Voith preps second turbine runner for shipment to Holtwood hydropower facility

WEST YORK, Pa. 4/9/12 (PennWell) -- Work continues on the Holtwood hydroelectric plant expansion project as manufacturer Voith Hydro will soon deliver the second of two 15-ton turbine runner assemblies, project owner PPL Corporation says.

An identical runner was transported to the site in February along the same 35-mile route that took four days to travel, according to a release.

The piece will be installed as part of a new powerhouse at the 108-MW Holtwood hydropower plant. When complete, the facility, which sits on the Susquehanna River, will have a total output capacity of more than 220 MW.

“When the project is completed next year, Holtwood will have added enough renewable energy to power 100,000 typical homes, bringing more clean, reliable energy to provide the electricity that powers our lives,” says John M. Levitski, PPL regional community relations director.

The company says the US$440 million expansion project is nearly 60% complete.

In August 2011, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission approved a request by PPL Holtwood LLC to certify incremental generation resulting from replacement of two 1.18-MW turbine-generators at the Holtwood plant. The original plant is undergoing rehabilitation, with an expected completion date of 2013.
