NYPA awards contract to Ferguson Electric for overhaul work at Lewiston Pump-Generating Plant

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. 4/4/12 (PennWell) -- Trustees of the New York Power Authority have approved a US$1.6 million contract to Ferguson Electric of Buffalo to assist in the Life Extension and Modernization (LEM) program at NYPA's Niagara Power Project’s Lewiston Pump-Generating Plant.

NYPA says the LEM program is designed to refurbish and modernize the 240-MW pumped-storage facility, "extending its working life years into the future."

As per the contract, Ferguson Electric will design, manufacture, deliver and install new isolated phase buses and phase reversal switches in late 2012.

NYPA regional manager Joseph Kessler says the work is an "instrumental step" in a much larger overhaul of the Lewiston plant. "The Power Authority is dedicated to ensuring that the Niagara project continues to operate at maximum efficiency," Kessler says. "The refurbishing of the Lewiston Pump-Generating Plant -- the hydroelectric project's auxiliary facility -- is consistent with this priority."

A 10-year, $460 million investment was approved by the NYPA trustees in 2010 that will include upgrades to each of the facility's 12 pump-turbines. NYPA says the overhaul will begin in December.

The work will progress at the rate of one pump-turbine unit every eight to nine months, with the final unit being completed in 2020.

Lewiston is one of two major pumped-storage facilities in New York State. The other, the 1,160-MW Blenheim-Gilboa Pumped Storage Power Project, is also operated by NYPA.

NYPA filed to amend the license with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission in January.
