Hydropower, renewables strong in EIA's most recent energy report

WASHINGTON, D.C. 4/9/12 (PennWell) -- Hydroelectric power and the renewable energy sector as a whole have shown growth over the past few years, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration's most recent “Monthly Energy Review.”

According to the EIA report, the renewable energy sector (hydro, biofuel, biomass, geothermal, solar and wind) grew 27.12% between Jan. 1, 2009, and Dec. 31, 2011 -- outpacing natural gas and crude oil production, which grew 13.66% and 14.27%, respectively. Nuclear power dropped by 1.99% and coal by 7.16%. Over this time period, domestic energy production increased by just 6.72%.

Across all energy sectors, EIA says renewable energy sources accounted for 11.74% of domestic production in 2011 -- up from 9.85% in 2008. And renewables accounted for 12.67% of net electrical generation in 2011, compare with 9.25% in 2008.

Strictly in terms of hydropower, the industry has shown 26.28% growth over the past three years and an increase of 27.6% in production. Hydropower accounted for 34.62% of domestic energy production from renewable sources in 2011, outpacing biomass (26.75%), biofuels (22.2%), wind (12.75%), geothermal (2.4%) and solar (1.24%).

EIA also publishes an annual report on the global energy industry.
