Deadline extended for studies of six Tanzania small hydro projects

DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania 4/12/12 (PennWell) -- Global Village Energy Partnership International (GVEP) has extended the deadline for expressions of interest from consultants to perform feasibility studies of six mini-hydropower projects in Tanzania. Responses now are due April 20.

GVEP previously called for expressions of interest by April 10.

GVEP, a consultant to the World Bank, is a charity devoted to finding market-based solutions to energy poverty in developing countries. It works to build the capacity of small and medium enterprises (SME) in Sub-Sahara Africa under the ESME Pre-Investment Technical Support program.

In Tanzania, GVEP is supporting six mini-hydropower projects totaling 7.5 MW in the Mbeya, Iringa, Ruvuma, Arusha, and Kigoma regions. All have undertaken pre-feasibility studies, although some are further ahead than others in terms of quality and quantity of data gathered and in steps to advance the projects.

In a separate program, the Tanzania Energy Development and Access Expansion Project (TEDAP), Tanzania's Rural Energy Agency recruited consultants in January to perform pre-feasibility studies of the 140-kW Zigi and 200-kW Kwabululu hydro projects.

GVEP currently seeks expressions of interest from firms to conduct feasibility studies for one or more of the six mini-hydros. Work is to include site inspection, technical surveys, power capacity assessment, and project design. GVEP is to perform cost analyses.

Expressions of interest and qualifications are due by e-mail, by April 20, to the address below. Include "EOI Environmental and Social Impact Assessment Study" in the subject line. A short-list of candidates is to be compiled.
