Sweco wins contract for work at Latvian hydropower projects

RIGA, Latvia 3/5/12 (PennWell) -- State utility Latvenergo AS has awarded a contract to Sweco for work at the Plavinas and Kegums 2 hydroelectric plants.

As per the contract, Sweco will assist with the procurement of suppliers, project management and technical advice, as well as the delivery and implementation of the two hydropower facilities.

The 900-MW Plavinas hydropower facility was constructed in 1966 and is on Latvia's Daugava River. The power station contains 10 turbines.

Meanwhile, the 180-MW Kegum 2 plant lies directly downstream and contains three turbines.

Both projects are scheduled for completion by the end of 2018. Financial details were not disclosed.

Swedan-based Sweco was awarded a $3.9 million contract for rehabilitation work at the 210-MW Stejaru-Bicaz hydroelectric facility in December 2011.
