Tajikistan seeks warning system for 126-MW Kayrakkum

DUSHANBE, Tajikistan 2/10/12 (PennWell) -- The government of Tajikistan invites expressions of interest from consultants to prepare an early warning system for 126-MW Kayrakkum Dam on Tajikistan's Syr Darya River. Responses are due February 15.

The government received a US$13 million grant from the World Bank's International Development Association to carry out the Ferghana Valley Water Resources Management Project, which includes work on Kayrakkum Dam (also spelled Kairakkum) and its reservoir, which was commissioned in 1957. It previously took bids for dredging equipment and sought consultants for irrigation and drainage rehabilitation and dam safety work.

The State Institution Project Management Unit, Ferghana Valley Water Resources Management Project now invites expressions of interest from consultants to prepare an early warning system for the area between Kayrakkum Dam and the Tajikistan-Uzbekistan border. Work is to include preparation of flood zoning maps and an early warning system, training of government officials, education of stakeholders, and establishment of location and elevation benchmarks in the dam area.

Expressions of interest are due February 15. For information, contact Director Vohid Rustamovich Sharipov, Project Management Unit, Ferghana Valley Water Resources Management Project, 5/1 Shamsi St., Dushanbe 734054 Tajikistan; Tel/Fax: (992) 2372-2366208; E-mail: pmu@fvwrmp.tj.
