Sierra Leone seeks warning systems for 50-MW Bumbuna

FREETOWN, Sierra Leone 2/13/12 (PennWell) -- Sierra Leone seeks bids to supply siren warning systems for the 50-MW Bumbuna hydroelectric project on the Seli River, 250 kilometers from Freetown. Bids are due February 17.

Developer Joule Africa announced in December that Lahmeyer International began a bankable feasibility study of expanding Bumbuna to a total of 389 MW. Joule Africa, an American-British unit of Joule Investments Group of the U.S., signed an agreement with the Sierra Leone government under which the developer is to carry out the Phase 2 expansion of the project.

Started in 1975, the first phase of Bumbuna was 85 percent complete when stalled for years by civil war. Completed in 2009, the project features an 88-meter-tall asphalt-faced rockfill dam, two tunnels, powerhouse, and 200-kilometer transmission line linking the project with Freetown, Makeni, and Lunsar.

The Project Management Unit of the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources now seeks bids to supply sirens, control room equipment, GSM (global system for mobile communications), poles and spares, to be installed and tested within 20 weeks of contract signing.

Bid documents in English may be obtained from the address below for US$100 or the equivalent in a freely convertible currency.

Bids are due by noon February 17. For information, contact Director, Project Management Unit, Bumbuna Hydroelectric Project, Electricity House, 5th Floor, Freetown, Sierra Leone; (232) 223233465609; E-mail: henkuyembeh@yahoo.com.
