U.S. seeks tainter gate rehab at 20-MW Big Cliff

 PORTLAND, Ore., U.S. 1/19/12 (PennWell) -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers seeks bids to redesign and rehabilitate three tainter gates at the 20-MW Big Cliff hydroelectric project on Oregon's North Santiam River. Bids are due Feb. 7.

Big Cliff is part of the Detroit-Big Cliff project 40 miles from Salem, Ore., which also includes the 110-MW Detroit plant.

In a solicitation set aside for small businesses, the Corps' Portland District seeks bids to redesign and fully rehabilitate the three gates to restore integrity and reliability in accordance with current codes, design criteria, and standards. Spillway tainter gate girders, strut arms, bracing members, and related structural components will be replaced with larger members and high-strength steel components. Trunnion bearings will be replaced and electrical, control, and mechanical systems will be evaluated, redesigned, and replaced to ensure reliability.

The work is expected to cost between $1 million and $5 million.
