Tanzania seeks studies of small hydropower projects

DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania 1/17/12 (PennWell) -- Tanzania's Rural Energy Agency invites expressions of interest from consultants to perform pre-feasibility studies of two small hydropower projects in Tanzania's Usambara Mountains. Responses are due January 26.

The World Bank approved a US$23 million credit line for private-sector-led rural and renewable energy development under the Tanzania Energy Development and Access Expansion Project (TEDAP). The program is to improve quality and efficiency of electricity service, establish a sustainable basis for energy access expansion, and help reduce carbon dioxide emissions by reducing barriers to renewable energy development.

Under the TEDAP program, the Rural Energy Agency seeks individual consultants to perform pre-feasibility studies of the 140-kW Zigi project and the 200-kW Kwabululu project.

Zigi would be built on the Zigi River in the Amani Forest Reserve. It would have a gross head of 84 meters and a proposed design discharge of 350 liters per second. Kwabululu would be built in Lushoto District near Kwefingo village and the Dindila tea factory. It would include a 500-meter power canal and 200-meter penstock, with gross head of 100 meters and design discharge of 450 liters per second.

Terms of reference may be obtained from the Secretary, Rural Energy Agency, Tender Board, Mawasiliano Towers, Procurement Management Unit, Room 214, 2nd Floor, Sam Nujoma Road, Ubungo, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, or from the Rural Energy Agency Internet site, www.rea.go.tz. Expressions of interest are due by noon January 26.
