Reclamation begins safety evaluation at Huntington North Dam

EMERY COUNTY, Utah 1/20/12 (PennWell) -- A Bureau of Reclamation safety evaluation of Huntington North Dam is under way as part of Reclamation's Safety of Dams Program.

Huntington North Dam is an earthfill dam located in the Green River Basin. It has a foundation consisting of clay, silt, sand and gravel. Samples of the foundation materials are being taken to determine their potential for liquefaction during a seismic event.

The field investigation is expected to continue through the spring and will be used to decide if seismic retrofit corrective work is required.

The dam is part of the Emery County Project and was identified in Spring 2011 as one having the potential for future hydroelectric production.
