Power production equipment delivered to Bui hydro project

BUI, Ghana 1/16/12 (PennWell) -- The Bui Power Authority (BPA) has taken delivery of three turbines and two transformers for installation at the 400-MW Bui hydroelectric project, BPA announces.

Each of the turbines cost US$4.7 million, while each transformer cost $1.7 million.

The pieces are parts of a powerhouse in Ghana's Brong Ahafo Region that is, according to a BPA representative, nearly 70% complete. The project features a concrete gravity dam with a five-bay spillway, three penstocks, a switchyard, 276 km of transmission line and a permanent bridge downstream of the dam.

Financing for the $622 million project is being provided through a concessional loan of $263.5 million and a buyers' credit of $298.5 million from the Chinese government and Exim Bank, respectively, with Ghana's contribution being $60 million.

Ghana selected SinoHydro Corporation Ltd. as the project's contractor in 2008, while management and staffing duties were assigned to BPA.

BPA officials said they are still awaiting the delivery of one more transformer but that the project is on schedule for commissioning by the end of 2012.

Chinese engineers blocked the Black Volta River in December 2008, launching the project's second phase.
