Iraq seeks to eliminate unit vibration, overheating at 415-MW Dokan

SULAYMANYHA, Iraq 1/31/12 (PennWell) -- The government of Iraq invites expressions of interest to diagnose and eliminate vibrations and overheating of turbine-generators of the 415-MW Dokan hydroelectric project on Iraq's Lesser Zab River. Responses are due February 15.

The World Bank approved a US$40 million loan to Iraq to finance urgent repairs and to prepare for subsequent full rehabilitation of Dokan and the 249-MW Derbandikhan project in Iraq's Kurdistan Region. The multi-purpose projects, which require major rehabilitation due to neglect and damage from war, were built in 1975 and 1987 to serve the Iraq grid as peaking plants.

In the current solicitation, the General Directorate of Electricity of Sulaymanyha, Kurdistan Regional Government, seeks expressions of interest to find the origin and eliminate vibrations of Dokan's Unit 1. If no major works are necessary, the contractor also is to reduce vibration to acceptable limits on the project's other four units.

Work also includes finding the origin and eliminating overheating of the thrust bearing of Unit 2. If no major works are necessary, the contractor also is to decide if new self-lubricating pads should be procured and shall install them. The contractor then would perform similar work on a second unit, while work on others would be performed by the owner.

Expressions of interest are due, in person, by mail, or by e-mail, to the address below by February 15. For information, contact General Directorate of Electricity of Sulaymanyha, Kurdistan Regional Government, Attn.: Fatih Saeed Salih, Project Management Team Director, Dokan and Derbandikhan Emergency Hydropower Project, Salim St., Chawarbax, Sulaymanyha, Iraq; (964) 7-701580336; E-mail: fatihsalih2@gmail.com.
