Iceland utility seeks transformers for 80-MW Budarhals

REYKJAVIK, Iceland 1/23/12 (PennWell) -- Iceland utility Landsvirkjun seeks bids to supply transformers for the 80-MW Budarhals hydroelectric project, under construction on Iceland's Tungnaa and Kaldakvisl rivers. Bids are due February 9.

Landsvirkjun awarded three contracts for Budarhals in 2011, to Istak for civil works, Voith Hydro Gmbh & Co. for electro-mechanical equipment, and Montavar Metalna Nova d.o.o. for gates and penstocks. To be completed in late 2013, Budarhals includes Spordalda Reservoir, two rockfill dams, spillway, 4-kilometer headrace tunnel, surge basin, steel-lined penstocks, tailrace canal, and concrete powerhouse containing two 40-MW Kaplan turbines.

Landsvirkjun now seeks bids to furnish and install two shell-type transformers to act as generator step-up transformers at the hydro plant.
