Ecuador utility seeks supervision to build 50-MW Quijos

QUITO, Ecuador 1/18/12 (PennWell) -- Ecuador utility Corporacion Electrica del Ecuador (Celec) seeks bids for consulting services to supervise construction, equipment installation, and commissioning of the 50-MW Quijos hydroelectric project on Ecuador's Quijos and Papallacta rivers. Bids are due January 31.

China Development Bank provided US$680 million to the Ecuador government in 2011 to finance Quijos and three other hydroelectric projects, 21 MW Mazar-Dudas, 276 MW Minas San Francisco, and 15 MW Villonaco. Celec awarded China National Electric Equipment Corp. (CNEEC) a US$94.7 million contract in December for construction and equipping of Quijos, to be complete by December 2015.

The Quijos project includes a diversion dam, side inlet, and desander in the Quijos catchment and a dam, side inlet, two desanders, and a pressure shaft in the Papallacta catchment. A 2,373-meter conduction tunnel from the Quijos River is to join a similar tunnel of 2,392 meters from the Papallacta River to form a common tunnel of 4,522 meters to a powerhouse containing three turbine-generators.

Celec seeks bids from consultants to audit: civil construction; engineering detail; manufacture, supply, installation, and testing of equipment; and commissioning of the project. The budget for the contract is US$7.69 million.
