DR Congo seeks intake dredging, turbine-generator rehab at Inga project

KINSHASA, Democratic Republic of Congo 1/5/12 (PennWell) -- The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) seeks firms to help dredge an intake channel and to rehabilitate two turbine-generators at the Inga hydroelectric complex on the Congo River. Responses to separate solicitations are due January 16 and February 28.

The DRC recruited consultants in 2011 to improve operation and maintenance management of the 350-MW Inga 1 and 1,424-MW Inga 2 hydroelectric projects.

The two plants produce a total of only 500 MW and are undergoing refurbishment. Meanwhile, the DRC and South Africa signed a memorandum of understanding in November to start development of the first phase of the proposed 40,000-MW Grand Inga hydroelectric project at the site on the Congo River.

Consultants sought for Inga intake channel dredging

In one current solicitation, DRC's utility, Societe Nationale d'Electricite (SNEL), and the Bureau Central de Coordination (BCECO) invite expressions of interest by January 16 from consultants with experience in dredging studies and dredging of intake channels, specifically for companies operating hydroelectric projects.

Terms of reference may be obtained from the address below. Expressions of interest, in French, are due to the address below by January 16, labeled "AMI/321/PMEDE/BCECO/DG/DPM/GK/2011/SC - Recrutement du Cabinet charge de l'Assistance technique a la SNEL pour le dragage du canal d'amenee d'Inga."

The DRC also seeks bids February 28 to rehabilitate two turbine-generators at the 350-MW Inga 1 hydro plant.

SNEL and BCECO took bids in 2011 for similar work to rehabilitate two turbine-generators at 1,424-MW Inga 2.

In the current solicitation, SNEL and BCECO seek bids for a turnkey contract for rehabilitation of Units G11 and G15 of the Inga 1 plant. Bidders must have experience in contracts for new work and rehabilitation of Francis and Kaplan turbines of at least 50 MW.

Tender documents in French may be obtained from the address below upon payment of US$300. Payment must be made to account No. 0240001145502 in the name of Projet BCECO at STANBIC Bank/Kinshasa, SWIFT: SBICCDKX. Bids are due by 3 p.m. February 28 to the address below.
