Andritz Hydro to supply equipment for Assiut project

ASSIUT, Egypt 1/9/12 (PennWell) -- Andritz Hydro was awarded a US$137.9 million contract by the Egyptian Ministries of Energy and Water Resources to supply equipment for installation of a 32-MW hydroelectric facility at the Assiut barrage on the Nile River.

Andritz will supply and install four bulb turbines, generators, and the electrical and hydromechanical equipment for the facility.

Bulb units can be particularly efficient in areas with low heads and high flow rates, which makes them well suited for the Assiut project, according to an Andritz release. The turbine runners have a 5.6 meter diameter were produced mainly in Andritz Hydro's Germany and Austria workshops.

The Assiut barrage is the oldest dam in the Egyptian section of the Nile River. It was completed in 1902. Installation of the hydro project is being conducted as part of a rebuild of the barrage that involves building a new barrage 200 to 300 meters downstream from the original. This rebuild will improve conditions for irrigation and shipping.

The project is expected to begin operating by 2017.
