Nile group names firm to study Kagera reservoirs including hydro

KIGALI, Rwanda 11/2/11 (PennWell) -- The Nile Basin Initiative (NBI) has named Coyne et Bellier Ingenieurs Conseils/Tractebel Engineering SA to perform feasibility studies of multi-purpose reservoirs, including hydropower, in the Kagera River Basin of Burundi, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda.

NBI recruited consultants for the work in 2010. NBI's Nile Equatorial Lakes Subsidiary Action Program (NELSAP) issued a similar request in 2009.

The French-Belgian group was chosen from among three bidders for a US$1.2 million contract. It is to develop a feasibility study of small and medium-scale multi-purpose storage reservoirs with an emphasis on agriculture, energy, and other uses such as water supply. The work is expected to require 13 months.

To perform the work, NBI required the consultants to have expertise in areas including water resources engineering and management, civil engineering, water resources modeling, irrigation engineering, hydropower development, financial and economic investment appraisal, and social and environmental assessments.
