Niger Basin Authority names dam management consultants

NIAMEY, Niger 11/17/11 (PennWell) -- Niger Basin Authority (NBA) has named Coyne et Bellier/Tractebel Engineering to study coordinated management of dams in the Niger River Basin.

NBA, the Autorite du Bassin du Niger, which includes Benin, Guinea, Mali, Niger, and Nigeria, took bids for the work in 2010.

The French-Belgian group was chosen from among five bidders for the contract, which is valued at 232.3 million Central French African francs (US$478,300).

Coyne et Bellier/Tractebel is to define rules and modalities of coordinated management of structuring dams in the Niger Basin. One product of the study is to be a legal document of water rules that will be annexed to the basin's Water Charter.

The World Bank's International Development Association approved a loan to NBA for a program of water resources development and sustainable management of ecosystems in the Niger Basin. Among existing hydro projects in the basin are 760-MW Kainji and 540-MW Jebba. Proposed projects include 90-MW Fomi, 125-MW Kandadji and 20-MW Taoussa.
