Colombia utility seeks bids to build 2,400-MW Ituango

Colombia utility Empresas Publicas de Medellin (EPM) seeks bids for major civil construction of the 2,400-MW Ituango hydroelectric project on Colombia's Cauca River. A site visit is planned November 10, with bids to be due February 22, 2012.

EPM reported in September that contractors have started preliminary work to begin construction of the project, which is expected to cost US$3 billion. (HydroWorld 9/22/11) Construction is scheduled for completion in the second quarter of 2013.

EPM now seeks bids for construction of a 225-meter-tall rockfill dam, an underground powerhouse to house eight turbine-generators, and associated works. The utility said it would open other solicitations in the coming months to procure generating equipment.

Ferrovial Agroman Chile S.A. and Sainc Ingenieros Constructores S.A. of Colombia received a 55 million euro (US$77.3 million) contract in July to build a powerhouse access tunnel and two river diversion tunnels. A consortium of Ingetec and Sedic of Colombia is to oversee construction under a US$66.3 million contract.

Solicitation documents may be obtained from the address below. Participation requirements are on the EPM Internet site under

A site visit is scheduled for 11 a.m. November 10. Bids are due by 3:10 p.m. February 22.
