Voith-led consortium to equip 1,850-MW Teles Pires in Brazil

A consortium led by Voith Hydro has received a contract to supply equipment to the 1,850-MW Teles Pires hydroelectric project on the Teles Pires River on the border of Brazil's Mato Grosso and Para states.

Brazil's environmental agency, Instituto Brasileiro de Meio Ambiente (Ibama), issued an installation license for Teles Pires August 19, authorizing construction at the plant site by the Companhia Hidreletrica Teles Pires consortium.

Voith said it signed the 220 million euro (US$290.8 million) contract August 22 on behalf of the electro-mechanical supply consortium.

The manufacturer said it will be responsible for supplying the 404-megavolt-ampere generators for the plant's five Francis turbines. It also is to supply control and automation systems, substations, mechanical and electrical balance of plant, the associated transmission system, and the project's detailed engineering. The first generating unit is to begin operation 38 months after a purchase order is issued.

Companhia Hidreletrica Teles Pires includes Brazil utility holding company Neoenergia with 50.1 percent, state-run utilities Eletrobras Furnas with 24.5 percent and Eletrobras Eletrosul with 24.5 percent, and Brazil engineering company Odebrecht with 0.9 percent.

Brazil's energy research agency, Empresa de Pesquisa Energetica, said the hydro project has the largest generating capacity of several proposed projects in the Teles Pires River Basin. In 2006, Brazil's electricity regulator, Agencia Nacional de Energia Eletrica, approved a development study of the Teles Pires River that identified the potential for developing six hydroelectric projects totaling 3,697 MW.
