U.S. seeks PIT tag infrastructure for Columbia Basin streams

A U.S. fisheries agency seeks bids to construct infrastructure that will allow instream monitoring of salmonids carrying passive integrated transponder tags in remote tributaries of the Columbia River Basin. Bids are due Sept. 5.

The Northwest Fisheries Science Center (NWFSC), a unit of the National Marine Fisheries Service, is developing a large-scale comprehensive monitoring program to be implemented in three Columbia River sub-basins of the Pacific Northwest. Passive integrated transponder transmitters have been used extensively to track fish as they travel past radio receivers in hydroelectric projects on the mainstem Columbia River.

The current solicitation calls for development of infrastructure in remote tributaries of the Columbia that will enable tracking of fish, mainly protected steelhead trout and stream-type Chinook salmon.

Work is to include construction of PIT tag detection systems suitable for remote site deployment in a wide range of Columbia River tributaries, installation of the systems at sites in the Wenatchee and Entiat basins of Washington, and maintenance of the systems.

A solicitation notice may be obtained from the Federal Business Opportunities Internet site, www.fbo.gov, by entering Solicitation No. WAD05845 in the "Keyword/Solicitation #" box.

Bids are due by fax or e-mail to the address below by 6 p.m., Pacific time, Sept. 5. For information, contact William Bell, Purchasing Agent, Northwest Fisheries Science Center, Conservation Biology Division, 2725 Montlake Blvd E., Seattle, WA 98112; (1) 206-526-4425; Fax: (1) 206-526-6205; E-mail: bill.bell@noaa.gov.
