FERC schedules Northwest fish passage workshop

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has scheduled a Northwest Fish Passage Training and Facilities Workshop Sept. 20-21 in Portland, Ore. Registration must be completed by Sept. 12.

The workshop is to address upstream and downstream fish passage facility design development for Pacific Northwest hydroelectric projects. Participants also are to discuss newly constructed fish passage facilities at FERC-licensed projects.

The first day of the workshop, at Portland's Benson Hotel, is to focus on upstream fish passage facility and component design development and criteria including: integrating biomechanical ability; fish behavior; hydraulic design; and power operations to provide upstream passage. The downstream fish passage component is to focus on design development and criteria for exclusion screen and bypass systems, turbine and spillway passage, and surface and reservoir collection, including monitoring and evaluations.

The second day is to include various panels of FERC licensees with newly installed fish passage facilities and the processes that ultimately led to design and installation of their facilities.

There is no charge for the workshop, which is open to the first 200 registrants. Separate hotel registration is required.
