Bank seeks hydro engineer for Papua New Guinea, Solomons projects

The World Bank seeks applications from experienced hydropower engineers to support its teams preparing hydroelectric projects in Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. Applications are due September 15.

The World Bank is among several lenders assisting the Pacific islands to develop their hydro capacity. Earlier this year, the Asian Development Bank approved a US$57.3 million loan to Papua New Guinea utility PNG Power Ltd. to fund renewable energy projects, including run-of-river hydro. PNG and Australia's Origin Energy also are evaluating the potential of the 1,800-MW Purari hydro project in Papua New Guinea. Meanwhile, in the Solomon Islands, the European Investment Bank funded a feasibility study of the 620-MW Tina River hydroelectric project on Guadalcanal.

The World Bank currently seeks a short-term consultant to support its teams involved in preparing hydro projects in Papua New Guinea and the Solomons. Work is to be performed over about 40 days between October 2011 and June 2012, subject to extension.

Responsibilities are to include commenting on documents related to hydro project preparation, including feasibility studies, expert and technical reports, and terms of reference for specialized services. The consultant is to prepare technical sections of World Bank documents such as mission aide memoirs, project concept notes, and project appraisal documents. Other work includes review of bid documents and identifying gaps in technical expertise in borrower teams or their consultants.

Applications are to be sent by e-mail to Nicole Forrester at by September 15. For information, see the World Bank Group's eConsultant2 Internet site,, Bidding Opportunities, Selection No. 1047686.
