Malawi seeks design, investment prep for Songwe River Basin

Malawi's irrigation and water ministry invites expressions of interest from consultants to perform detailed design and investment preparation for development of the Songwe River Basin. Responses are due August 5.

The Ministry of Irrigation and Water Development recruited consultants in 2010 to advance a multi-purpose water infrastructure investment strategy. The ministry previously said it was looking at multi-purpose dam construction on the Songwe, North Rukuru, Kasitu, Bua, Shire, and Ruo rivers.

The governments of Malawi and Tanzania received a grant from the African Water Facility and New Partnership for Africa's Development - Infrastructure Project Preparation Facility (NEPAD-IPPF) toward the Songwe River Basin Development Program within both countries.

On behalf of both governments, the Ministry of Irrigation and Water Development seeks consultants to prepare a "Shared Vision" toward 2050 and a 10-year Songwe Basin development program. The work is to include detailed designs and preparation of priority investment projects.

The assignment, which is to take 24 months, also includes environmental and social assessments, development of a joint river basin commission, and integrated water resources management capacity building. Capital investment project preparation includes feasibility studies, detailed designs, and preparation of tender documents.

Expressions of interest, labeled "Request for Expression of Interest for the Consultancy Services of the Detailed Design and Investment Preparation Project of the Songwe River Basin Development Program (SRBDP)," are due by noon August 5 by hand delivery, registered mail, or e-mail.
