Uruguay courts consultants for water resources management

Uruguay's national water directorate plans to recruit consultants to help implement a national integrated water resources management program.

Direccion Nacional de Aguas (DINAGUA) has received a technical cooperation grant of US$1 million from the Inter-American Development Bank, to which it plans to contribute another US$250,000 for the program. Uruguay's energy and mining ministry reported last year the nation has the potential to develop 276 MW of small hydropower capacity.

The integrated water resources management program is to preserve the quantity and quality of water resources, reduce conflicts in water usage, improve supply and promote demand reduction, reduce vulnerability to drought and flooding, incorporate users and civil bodies in planning and management, and coordinate policy making and resource management with other sectoral policies.

Prospective bidders seeking more information are invited to contact Direccion Nacional de Aguas (DINAGUA), Pablo Silva, Rondeau 1665 Esquina Galicia, Montevideo, Uruguay; (598) 2-9170710 extension 5000; E-mail: psilva@mvotma.gub.uy; Internet: www.mvotma.gub.uy.
