HMI to supply wearing and bearing materials for G.M. Shrum hydro project overhaul in Canada

Ontario-based HMI Wearing and Bearing Products has been awarded a contract for the supply all greaseless wearing and bearing materials required for the refurbishment of BC Hydro's Gordon M. Shrum hydropower project's units 1-5.

HMI (Hydro Marine Industrial) is a distributor, manufacturer and manufacturers agent of environmentally-friendly, wearing, bearing and sealing products for hydro turbine and hydro gate refurbishments and new builds.

The contract to HMI, awarded by Voith Hydro, consists of the supply of all wicket gate, link and servo bushings, as well as all operating ring wear pads, wicket gate thrust washers and counter thrust segments. Last year, B.C. Hydro awarded a contract to Voith Hydro for the complete overhaul of five Francis turbine units for the G. M. Shrum hydropower plant, located near Hudson's Hope, British Columbia.

The suitability of HMI's greaseless bearing materials (manufactured by CIP Composites) for the BCH project was determined through inspection visits to the CIP manufacturing facility, by supplier quality management personnel and from Voith and BC Hydro, HMI said.

The 1960s-era turbines in G.M. Shrum Units 1 to 5 must be replaced to ensure ongoing reliability, availability and operational flexibility of these units, which represent 12 percent of BC Hydro's power production.

Voith Hydro's scope of supply includes five new 310-MW turbines, site construction, installation and start-up. The first unit is scheduled for commissioning in 2012. Each year, one unit will be replaced until all five units are in service in early 2017.
