Niger Basin renews call for study, design of 90-MW Fomi

The Niger Basin authority invites expressions of interest to update a feasibility study and to perform design and tender preparation for construction of the 90-MW Fomi hydroelectric project in the upper Niger River Basin. Responses are due March 28.

Autorite du Bassin du Niger (ABN) issued a similar solicitation in 2008. The World Bank's International Development Association approved a grant to the government of Guinea, which allotted it to ABN, which includes Guinea, Benin, Mali, Niger, and Nigeria, for a program of water resources development and durable management of ecosystems in the Niger River Basin.

Fomi is to be built on the Niandan River at the city of Fomi, with an installed capacity of 90 MW producing 402 GWh annually. Previous studies had estimated the project could be as large as 190 MW. The project's 42-meter-tall embankment dam would create a reservoir of 507 square kilometers providing irrigation to 80,000 hectares of farmland in Guinea and Mali. The project also would include 400 kilometers of transmission lines.

The national directorate of rural engineering, Direction Nationale de Genie Rural, seeks consultants to update feasibility studies; perform detailed engineering for construction of the dam and associated works; and prepare terms of reference for bid documents.

Expressions of interest and qualifications are due by 10 a.m. March 28. For information, contact:
