Venezuela seeks archaeological consultant for 2,320-MW Manuel Piar

State utility Electrificacion del Caroni (Edelca) invites expressions of interest from consultants to develop an archaeological research and rescue program for the 2,320-MW Manuel Piar hydroelectric project being built on Venezuela's Caroni River. Responses are due January 15, 2011.

The Inter-American Development Bank lent Venezuela US$1.75 billion in 2009 to complete construction of Manuel Piar, the former Tocoma project, which includes a 300-meter-long, 82-meter-tall concrete dam and hydropower station. IMPSA of Argentina signed a US$520 million contract to supply 10 232-MW Kaplan turbines, generators, and other equipment.

Edelca, a unit of nationalized utility holding company Corpoelec, seeks a firm for prospecting, geographic location, and recording of archaeological sites in the area affected by the project; selection of sites considered most relevant to excavation; and excavation, collection, and analysis of archaeological materials.

Expressions of interest, including a summary of qualifications of no more than five pages, are due to the address below by January 15.
