Mozambique seeks auxiliary spillway for Massingir Dam

Mozambique's water directorate invites applications for pre-qualification to build an auxiliary spillway for Massingir Dam on Mozambique's Olifants River. Responses are due February 15.

Direccao Nacional de Aguas (DNA) recruited firms in 2009 to rehabilitate the bottom outlet works of Massingir Dam. Massingir's outlet pipes ruptured in 2008, a year after US$60 million in dam rehabilitation work had been completed with funding from the African Development Bank.

The dam's original leakage, which began within months after the dam was completed in 1977, prevented the reservoir from holding more than 40 percent of its capacity. That reduced irrigation potential 60 percent and delayed a plan to build a 40-MW hydropower plant. Upon completion of the leakage repairs the reservoir was refilled until the rupture of Massingir's outlet pipes in May 2008.

DNA now plans to pre-qualify firms to build an auxiliary spillway on the left bank of Massingir Dam, including an unlined channel, a 150-meter-wide concrete weir with 14 fuse gates, a 200-meter-long concrete discharge channel, and earth embankments. Other work includes strengthening Portela saddle dam on the right bank of Massingir and placing protective earth fill at Massingir's downstream toe.

Pre-qualification documents may be obtained from the address below for US$100 by request labeled "Request for Pre-qualification Documents for Construction of an Auxiliary Spillway at Massingir Dam."

Applications for pre-qualification are due by 11 a.m. February 15 to the address below.
