Siemens to modernize four power plants in Iraq

Siemens erhält Auftrag für Kraftwerkskomponenten aus dem Irak - Siemens receives order from Iraq for power plant components

In a move to help enhance Iraq’s energy supply, Siemens signed multi-million dollar service contracts with the country’s Ministry of Electricity.

The project will see the maintenance and upgrade services of seven power plant units inside four power plants located in the areas of South Basra, Salah El Deen, Middle Region and Middle Euphrates.

With about 15,700 MW of available power generation capacity, the Iraqi Ministry of Electricity is working towards improving the availability and reliability of power supply, while minimizing power losses. This service project with Siemens will support the nation’s industrial development plans and meet its growing population’s demand for power.

Commenting on the agreement, Tim Holt, CEO of Siemens Power Generation Services, said, “Iraq is taking significant steps to help improve its electricity infrastructure and we are pleased to be working alongside the Ministry of Electricity on modernizing these four critically important power plants. Through a number of technology and operational enhancements, these power plants will benefit from improved efficiency, output and performance, thereby providing reliable power to meet the needs of Iraq and its citizens.”

The landmark agreement calls for Siemens to carry out critical service and maintenance works across the four power plants. The outage and upgrade services will enhance the reliability and efficiency of these units, helping them collectively generate more than 1,000 MW of power, 400 MW more than today, and save up to 10 percent in fuel consumption. This is enough to supply approximately three million Iraqi people with reliable electricity. The agreement includes spare parts supply as well as manpower training to enhance energy efficiency.
