Ohio Gov. Kasich vetoes renewable energy rewrite

Ohio Gov. John Kasich (R) has vetoed a bill that would have made compliance with the state’s renewable portfolio mandates optional for the next three years.

The Kasich press office announced the actions on various bills, including renewable legislation substitute House Bill 554, on Dec. 27. The veto statement was issued by the governor’s office on Dec. 22.

The measure would hurt Ohio’s wide range of energy generation options, Kasich said in a statement. The bill would also deal a setback to companies that are making progress in curbing their energy bills, Kasich said.

“The Administration stands ready to work with the General Assembly to advance strategies for helping ensure competitive energy costs,” Kasich went on to say in his statement.

Barring a legislative override, the governor’s action on the energy measure will resume benchmarks established in 2008 that were gradually increasing electric utilities’ use of alternative energy sources such as wind and solar power, according to a report from Reuters. The 2008 standards also require utilities to find measurable ways for consumers to reduce their energy use.
