Siemens, Space-Time Insight to team on smart grid tech

Siemens Digital Grid in the U.S. will join its smart grid platform with Space-Time Insight Inc.’s real-time visual analytics applications in a deal announced this week. Siemens said the partnership will strengthen its applications and provide utilities with better insight into asset health and grid reliability.

"Joining Space-Time Insight’s visual analytics with our advanced SCADA platform makes information even more valuable and actionable for a utility,” said Mike Carlson, president of Siemens Digital Grid, in a statement. “Utilities must be able to rely on predictive, intelligent analytics to deliver reliable power to their customers and we’re pleased this new partnership between Siemens and Space-Time Insight will help utilities thrive in the evolving digital energy landscape."

As part of the agreement, the companies will integrate Space-Time Insight’s Asset Intelligence and other visual analytics applications for utilities with the Siemens Spectrum Power SCADA platform. Data collected by the Siemens platform will be analyzed and visualized in Space-Time Insight’s applications.

These combined tools, the companies say, will improve utility operations and planning by giving engineers detail insight into potential asset failures due to bad weather and other threats. The utilities also could use the tools to model asset health and avoid outages.

”Siemens captures a wealth of data through their advanced SCADA systems,” said Rob Schilling, CEO of Space-Time Insight. “Our visual analytics applications put that data in context, enabling utilities to make fast, confident decisions that improve reliability and facilitate the delivery of unparalleled service to their customers.”

Siemens Digital Grid has worked with more than 1,000 utilities in North America on reliability and resiliency projects, according to the statement. Overall, Siemens AG’s U.S. subsidiary, Siemens Corp., generated about $22.4 billion in revenue for fiscal 2015 and employs about 50,000 people in the U.S. and Puerto Rico.

San Mateo, California-based Space-Time Insight works with companies to provide spatial, temporal and modal analysis. Its situational intelligence software powers mission-critical systems for many large companies, including eight of the largest U.S. utilities, according to STI’s website.
