Red Butte Wind and Red Butte Transmission Line filed a June 21 report with the North Dakota Public Service Commission saying that they are planning to develop the Red Butte wind farm project and an associated transmission line.

The project will be located in Oliver County, North Dakota, west-northwest of Center, North Dakota. The planned maximum potential capacity is estimated to be about 200 MW. The final output will depend upon the ultimate selection of the wind turbines to be sited.

Red Butte anticipates the in-service date for the project to be in the fourth quarter of 2018. The transmission line would extend between the wind project's substation in Oliver County and one of three potential interconnection points in either Mercer County or Oliver County:

·      connecting directly to the Great River Energy substation located about 3.3 miles southeast of Stanton, North Dakota, in Mercer County;

·      connecting directly to the Basin Electric Power Cooperative substation located about 3.9 miles southeast of Stanton, North Dakota in Mercer County; or

·      tapping directly into the Midcontinent Independent System Operator-operated transmission line located about 3.2 miles northeast of Center, North Dakota, in Oliver County.

The transmission line is anticipated to be 230 kV in size and between 11 and 17 miles in length, depending on the final route selected.

Red Butte does not have any plans to construct, own or operate any generation or transmission facilities in North Dakota other than this wind project and this transmission line at this time.

Red Butte said it has retained a qualified environmental consulting firm to evaluate the proposed wind project site and transmission line corridor and route. Red Butte is studying which regional utilities may have a need for the wind energy capacity produced by the project, and to identify various options for transmitting the output to the identified utilities' respective loads.

Red Butte said it has also initiated discussions with other parties who may potentially benefit from the project, depending upon the ultimate transmission interconnection selection. Red Butte has begun studies with both the MISO and the Southwest Power Pool for potential interconnection of the wind project at the interconnection points discussed above.

The PRC team includes personnel with substantial project management and development experience. The team maintains a strong network of development services to successfully complete quality wind energy projects. PRC is headed up by Paul White, President, with 20 years experience in the industry, including manufacture, sales, project development, finance, construction and energy policy."
